Punjab Kings’ Recent Form

Very good! After a confidence-sapping defeat to the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Punjab Kings produced the perfect riposte with a dominating display over the CSK.

All the talk after the game was the performance of Englishman Liam Livingstone, who hammered 60 runs from just 32 balls and claimed two wickets in a stunning all-round display.

However, it was a complete team performance – every bowler asked to bowl managed to take a wicket, while only skipper Mayank Agarwal and Bhanuka Rajapaksa failed of the recognised batsmen.

They look in great nick and are fast-becoming one of my fancies for the tournament. It wasn’t difficult to select them to win as part of my Punjab Kings vs Gujarat Titans odds.

Team News

The game against CSK came slightly too early for Englishman Jonny Bairstow, but he could make his first appearance of the season here.

His presence will significantly strengthen the PBKS batting line-up, with West Indies all-rounder Odean Smith expected to drop to number seven to accommodate his arrival.

There don’t appear to be any further injury concerns for the PBKS.

Player to Watch: Mayank Agarwal

While I am enjoying the performance of the PBKS in general, there is a concern surrounding the form of the skipper Mayank Agarwal.

He has hit scores of 32, 1, and 4 since the beginning of the season – an average of 12 is far too low for a player of his quality.

His captaincy ability is not in question, but is the role impacting his ability as an opener? I don’t usually subscribe to the idea that the pressure of captaincy affects a player’s form – but something appears off with Agarwal.

Here’s hoping he puts my doubts to bed!

Punjab’s Likely XI

Shikar Dhawan, Mayank Agarwal (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Shahrukh, Odean Smith, Harpreet Brar, Sandeep Sharma, Rahul Chahar, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh.

Gujarat Titans Recent Form

Impeccable! The Gujarat Titans are yet to lose a match and will fancy their chances of making it three in a row.

Their win over IPL 21 table-toppers the Delhi Capitals on Saturday was especially impressive. A jaw-dropping knock from Shubman Gill stole the show to help set 172 as a target before New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson took four wickets to lead his team to a 14-run triumph.

On paper, the Titans have one of the strongest bowling attacks in the tournament – and so far it’s showing. Alongside Ferguson, Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, and Rashid Khan have all been among the wickets so far this season.

As a team, they have registered 15 wickets across their last two IPL games at an average of 7.5 wickets per innings. Among the highest of all IPL teams in these relatively early stages of the competition.

Team News

There are no new injuries to report, and all the focus will be on keeping their wickets in tact for the opening overs.

In their previous two matches, they have lost an opening batter within the first three balls of their innings. Given that Gill and Matthew Wade represent the most amount of batting quality in a top-heavy order, team management will know a good start with the blade will be crucial to outscore a strong PBKS roster.

Player to Watch: Shubman Gill

Any sore eyes out there? Take a look at Gill’s stupendous knock against the DC last time out.

A brutal combination of elite-level timing, sumptuous technique, and punch-packing power saw Gill score 84 runs from just 46 balls at a strike rate of 182.61 to kickstart his IPL 22 campaign.

Franchise fans will be hoping for more of the same and so will I! I am backing Gill to top score for the Titans with Betway at 3.20.

Gujarat Titan’s Likely XI

Matthew Wade, Shubman Gill, Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Abhinav Manohar, Rashid Khan, Varun Aaron, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammed Shami.

Venue & conditions

The Brabourne Stadium has been a bit of a batsman’s paradise this season – five of the six teams to compete at this venue over the last three IPL fixtures have hit over 170 runs with the Lucknow Super Giants and the Chennai Super Kings both hitting more than 200 runs.

Friday looks set to be the hottest day of the week – reaching 36 degrees in Mumbai at some point. Will the pitch hold together in the red hot temperatures?
